GREG McINROY
Since before I started grade school, fishing has been my favourite passtime and has been also a important part of my heritige. I lived within walking distance of the Fraser river and it's many tributaries for the first 16 years of my life. Once I was able to drive, I was gone to the Gulf Islands; salmon and lingcod fishing or to the interior of B.C. flyfishing for trout. In 1975 I moved to the Prince George area and fished many lakes in and around Babine to the west and the Bowran to the east. By 1983 I had fished or seen most lakes and rivers within a four to five hour drive in every direction from P.G. But the call of the south coast and the ocean brought me back to the lower Fraser Valley. By this time fisheries had built hatcheries on the Chilliwack and other local streams to enhance salmon and steelhead stocks and had improved the fishing drastically. I would work afternoon shift at the mill and fish every morning for steelhead during the week as weekends we too busy on those rivers. 1984 I started taking my boat to Barkley Sound and leaving it there from May to September and started guiding part-time on weekends and on my holidays and quickly realized I just couldn't get enough time on the water so I quit working at the mill and started guiding full time. April 1990 I moved to Port Alberni and have never looked back. Allthough I have fished the whole west side of the island from Nitnat to Quatsino Sound, I prefer Tahsis-Esperenza-Nookta areas: the scenery is like nowhere else and the fishing is almost unbelievable for most of the summer. This area has been my home every summer starting 1993 and I have no plans of leaving for another 15 years. My season starts mid May and goes to mid September. I then go back to Port Alberni to fish for Chinook,Coho and Summer run Steelhead. After November 15 the winterrun Steelhead start to show in the lower Stamp, Sproat and Somass rivers and by December 15 you should expect double digit days. I also offer trips on other rivers such as the Gold, Cowichan, and Nitnat. Saltwater fishing is done from a 26 foot sportfisherman which has full electronics and a stand up head. River fishing is from a jet powered riverboat or fiberglass driftboat depending on river location and conditions. For more info and available dates contact Roger or Kim at newtoncovelodge.com
DEREK "ROWDY" SCHURDEVIN
Derek has been sport fishing the Esperanza and surrounding waters for 12 years. Four years ago Derek decided to turn his passion for battling monster salmon and halibut into a career. Aboard his 22 ft. Campion Explorer with a brand new Suzuki four stroke outboard, together with top of the line fishing gear, he continues to put clients into daily limits of fish. His very calm demeanor often disguises his drive for guests to have the fishing experience of a lifetime, and that is his goal. Aside from successful fishing trips, Derek's foremost concern is safety. He currently holds a "Marine Emergency Duties" certificate, a "Pleasure Craft Operators Card", Level 1 first aid w/transportation, and is also fully insured.
